Hanuman - Simian Symbol of Strength
Hanuman is one of the most popular Hindu deities. Hanuman is the son of Vayu, the Hindu god of Wind, and is looked upon by Hindus as the ultimate hero. He represents the figure of the ideal being, as he is humble yet brave. His physical prowess, mental discipline and spiritual purity have made him extremely popular all over India. Hanuman, the mighty ape that aided Lord Rama in his expedition against evil forces, is one of the most popular idols in the Hindu pantheon. Believed to be an avatar of Lord Shiva, Hanuman is worshiped as a symbol of physical strength, perseverance and devotion. Hanuman's tale in the epic Ramayana - where he is assigned the responsibility to locate Rama's wife Sita abducted by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka — is known for its astounding ability to inspire and equip a reader with all the ingredients needed to face ordeals and conquer obstructions in the way of the world. Hindus believe in ten avatars of Lord Vishnu among a multitude of gods and goddesses.

Hanuman is worshipped by villagers as a protective boundary guardian, by Shaiva ascetics as a Yogi and by wrestlers for his strength.There are numerous temples for Hanuman, and his images are usually installed at all temples where images of avatars of Vishnu are installed. Hanuman temples are believed to keep the area and surroundings free of rakshasas and 'evils'. This was a presentational 'Varam' to him by Rama and Sita. Hanuman idols are found on mountain roads because it is believed that he protects people from accidents.
