The shrine of St. Teresa of Avila at Mahe, is one of the oldest shrines in India and probably the oldest in Malabar. But later about the year 1788 the Shrine was thoroughly renovated or perhaps reconstructed and given the form in which it is seen today by Abbe Duchenin A Government record dating back to 1874 referring to this renovation of shrine by Abbe Duchenin ius preserved in the revenue officer sat mahe. The roof however was a thatched one at that time and only in 1874 it was covered over with Manglore tiles. The tower of the church was renovated in 1855 and the clock on the tower which gives correct time even no to the whole town of mahe was fixed up there in that year. The clock is said to have been presented by some french marines to the Church. The string has been again in 1956 renovated and eletrified on July 15 , 1956 thew renoveted sahirne was opened for divine services In 1958 the flooring of the Church and the plastering of the tower was renovated During subsequent years
Mahe, a small town (9 km²) surrounded on all sides by Kerala, is officially a part of the Union Territory of Pondicherry. The official name of Mahe is Mayyazhi in the local Malayalam language. The original name of Mahe, Mayyazhi, means "eyebrow of the sea". The Kannur District surrounds Mahe on three sides and Calicut District from one side. The nearest airport is Calicut International Airport, Karipur, at a distance of 85 km; Kannur Airport under construction is nearing completion at Mattannur at a distance of 40 km. The nearest Railway Station is Mahe, where a few local and express trains stop. The nearest major railway stations, where several long distance trains stop, are Thalassery, Kannur and Badagara. Formerly a French colony, Mahe now forms a municipality in Mahe district of the Union Territory of Pondicherry (based on the east coast). The name Mahe originated in honour of Bertrand François Mahe de La Bourdonnais (1699–1753), a key architect of French policy in India. One hypothesis suggests that the form of the word originated from Mayyazhi, which evolved to sound like Mayye, and which the French adopted as "Mahe". An alternative account suggests that the Count de La Bourdonnais adopted the name of the Indian town as part of his own name, rather than vice versa.
The culture and geography of this area is like almost of those in Kerala. The major festival of this region is Vishu. The Mahe Palli (Mahe Church) is a famous pilgrimage centre for Christians. The major languages are Malayalam, Tamil and French. Mahe, like most union territories in India, has low taxes on liquor. This makes it a popular destination for people from the neighbouring state of Kerala. Kerala is the state with the highest per capita liquor consumption in India and it has a very high tax on alcohol (around 151%).
